Unveiling the secrets of Trauma Negligence

TLA Director and Co-founder Stuart Matthews, a Consultant Surgeon in Major Orthopaedic Trauma, will be sharing his expertise at the upcoming ‘Medico-legal Issues in Trauma’ conference on 13 May in Edinburgh.

The event, organised by Inspire MediLaw, aims to enhance the medico-legal skills and knowledge of legal professionals through accredited training and conferences.

Stuart will leverage his vast expertise in the Medico-legal field for his upcoming  presentation. He will delve into real-life anonymised case studies to illustrate common trauma negligence cases, breach of duty and causation issues, all crucial for formulating legal claims or defences.

Stuart explains: “The test of whether a doctor breached the duty of care owed to a patient is whether he or she has failed to meet the standard of a reasonable body of other practitioners also skilled in that field.

“In my field, one of the leading causes of negligence often stems from overlooking or missing ‘compartment syndrome.’ I will also delve into the importance of meticulous note taking by doctors to illustrate the critical thinking processes that underscore the key points I aim to emphasise.”

By focusing on common negligence themes at TLA, Stuart will provide a comprehensive overview of trauma and the specific medical aspects related to trauma and orthopaedic negligence and personal injury.

The conference, tailored for clinical negligence and personal injury lawyers, will address key issues in misdiagnosis or delayed diagnosis in trauma claims. Chaired by Lauren Sutherland KC from Ampersand Advocates, the event promises a practical approach with insights from top trauma specialists using clinical case studies.

Attendees will gain knowledge on the three main types of trauma, understand reasonable practice for successful claims or defences, stay updated on medical advancements in trauma investigation and treatment, and learn about time-critical aspects in trauma diagnoses.

“I support open and honest communication between experts and lawyers regarding clinical negligence and personal injury cases without going through a third party. Building personal relationships with lawyers can prevent misunderstandings, and being accessible to discuss cases can help clarify any issues that arise, “said Stuart.

Stuart’s presentation promises to be informative and insightful for all attendees, equipping them with valuable knowledge and skills in handling trauma-related cases.
