Providing expertise grounded in achievement and excellence

Producing expert medical reports requires a leader in their field and Dr Stuart Jamieson is an excellent example.

“As a neurologist I have a specialist interest in movement disorders of which Parkinson's disease is probably the most important along with Huntington’s disease, dystonia, tremor, and headache,” he explained.

“In my medicolegal work much of personal injury is to do with head injuries and they are commonly what my reports are about.”

Like all TLA specialists, Dr Jamieson has had a successful career and is a recognised authority in his subject.

Having obtained a science degree from Oxford University he went to gain a medical degree from Birmingham University in 1984. He became a member of the Royal College of Physicians in 1988 and in 1997 completed specialist training in Neurology at the Institute of Neurological Sciences, Glasgow.

In 1990 he was awarded a Training Fellowship with the Medical Research Council and gained a PhD for investigating molecular mechanisms underlying the latency of herpes viruses in the central nervous system.

By 1997 he had been appointed Consultant Neurologist at Leeds General Infirmary and Senior Lecturer in Neurology at the University of Leeds where he ran and oversaw the Regional Specialist Movement Disorder and Headache Services and was the Regional Training Programme Director for Neurology in Yorkshire for 10 years dealing with all aspects of junior doctor training.

He now works as a Consultant Neurologist based at the Nuffield Health Leeds Hospital

A member of the Association of British Neurologists and the Movement Disorder Society, Dr Jamieson has produced more than 30 publications and presentations and has been a speaker at large events at regional and national level.

He is also a key element of a very successful research collaboration with the University of York investigating the use of computers to analyse and measure various aspects of movement in health and disease. This has led to the establishment of a spin-off company of which he is a founding shareholder and medical advisor.

As for his medicolegal work, in a typical year he drafts up to 80 personal injury reports and about 20 clinical negligence reports. He meets regularly with Counsel and has appeared in court on numerous occasions.

He said: “I am now doing more in the field of clinical negligence” and “I have written, unsolicited positive feedback from lawyers who have been assisted by my expertise in gaining a very successful outcome for their cases.”

He has worked as an expert at TLA for more than 10 years and speaks highly of the support he receives. “I've always found TLA very good in responding and getting the answers to any queries that are raised – they have always been very helpful and are very good at managing the administrative side of things.”

Occasionally, some cases can be more challenging and again TLA are able to support the expert witness when there may be differences of opinion.

Away from his professional commitments, Dr Jamieson has a long-standing interest in Christianity and has been an active member of a church for many years.  Along with his wife, he has enjoyed renovating three derelict houses to date and they are now working on another major renovation and refurbishment project.
