Top surgeon taps into ‘seamless service’
A sure sign of a surgeon leading their field is the level of research they carry out as they look to push the boundaries of their professional expertise.
Andrew Titchener is a fine example. As well as being Consultant Trauma, Shoulder and Elbow surgeon at the John Radcliffe Hospital Trauma Centre, and the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre, Oxford, he is also the Clinical Lead for the Oxford Trauma Unit. He has a special interest in complex upper and lower limb trauma, and elective shoulder and elbow surgery including arthroplasty and keyhole procedures.
Mr Titchener is also widely published and deputy editor of the Bone and Joint 360 Journal, a British national journal with a global readership.
He holds a Post-Graduate Certificate in Education and is an associate member of AdvanceHE, formerly the Higher Education Academy – experiences he uses to teach junior surgeons in training and undergraduates at the University of Oxford where he is an Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer and a fellow of Wolfson College.
Mr Titchener said: “I'm a member of the British Shoulder and Elbow Society and the Orthopaedic Trauma Society. I teach on national and international courses and I am a faculty member for AO Trauma, the world’s largest global trauma and orthopaedic community.”
He is also a current fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England and a member of the British Orthopaedic Association.
As a result, his services as an expert legal witness are unsurprisingly in demand, particularly as he also holds a Master of Laws degree in medical law. He feels this permits him an understanding of the issues facing instructing parties, and hence their requirements.
"TLA expertly handles my personal injury and clinical negligence cases, with their dedicated team efficiently managing my caseload. They take care of all my typing, organise medical records meticulously, and oversee all administrative tasks," he added.
“It just makes everything very easy. TLA obviously offer a better service to the solicitors than I could if I were doing it myself and they just make it very smooth by ensuring all the notes are prepared. It is a seamless service.”
With TLA, Mr Titchener focuses on injury and medical negligence work, particularly major trauma in the upper and lower limbs, and elective shoulder and elbow issues.
He said: “I cover up to 80 cases a year; the cases are both complex and challenging. TLA provides a prompt service with outstanding attention to detail and accuracy and that means I can provide a high-quality service to the instructing party.”
Mr Titchener graduated from the University of Cambridge in 2005 and in addition to a degree in Natural Sciences also holds a master’s degree in Orthopaedic Engineering.
He undertook a trauma fellowship in the busiest UK Major Trauma Centre at Queens Medical Centre, Nottingham and completed six month fellowships in shoulder, elbow and trauma surgery in Cambridge, Oxford and Perth, Australia.
Mr Titchener's elective clinical practice encompasses arthroscopic (keyhole) and arthroplasty (joint replacement) procedures of both the shoulder and elbow. He has a particular interest in complex upper limb trauma and post-traumatic reconstruction.
He provides a tertiary elbow reconstruction service accepting referrals from other hospitals around the country.
